Avignon, City of the Popes

To be explored under ideal conditions as you are just a few kilometres from the City of the Popes. Avignon is a unique city, on the banks of the Rhône spanned by its famous bridge (that stops halfway) that is home to a Palace of sumptuous popes; a city that is also a cornerstone of theatrical culture with its Festival that takes place every summer.

Avignon is a city with a rich heritage that has successfully transformed into a dynamic and enterprising town. A daytime visit will take you on a voyage of discovery and history, and why not enjoy a show and/or try out one of the lovely little restaurants. We recommend using the car parks indicated, in particular on the other side of the Rhône, with shuttles, as it can be difficult to park within the town itself.

Within the town of Avignon itself

Its well-preserved ramparts are home to a network of little streets so typical of Provençal towns. Avignon is in the heart of Provence. It is hot there, sometimes very hot, and the Palais des Papes (Palace of the Popes) is a welcome refuge. The audio-guided tours are fabulous and throughout the summer the Palace hosts family visits tailored to young children. Six popes reigned in Avignon in the 14th century before finally choosing Rome as the centre of Christianity. Built on a rock overlooking the Rhône, the imposing structure and symbol of Avignon, was a fortress before it became a Palace. It was the theatre of incredible tales, historical dramas and prestigious visits…

On the Bridge of Avignon

Built in the 12th century, the Saint-Bénezet Bridge, better known as the ‘Pont d’Avignon’ (Bridge of Avignon) was, at the time, the only structure connecting the two banks of the Rhône, between Lyon and the Mediterranean sea. An architectural feat. After the successive collapse of the piers, then their reconstruction, followed by their collapse, it was ultimately decided not to rebuild it.

If you go there to dance, remember that you won’t be able to reach the right bank. But a walk out onto this thousand-year-old bridge is a must, especially to see the little chapel built on the bridge. H2 Avignon Festival

The famous Avignon Festival is held in July of every year. Founded in 1947 by Jean Vilar, this unmissable summer gathering has become one of the biggest contemporary performing arts events in the world. During the festival, the city becomes a “city-theatre”, transforming its architectural heritage into various performance venues, majestic or surprising, welcoming tens of thousands of theatre lovers of all generations. A unique event that is not to be missed!

Avignon for a shopping spree

Lastly, Avignon provides an interesting interlude during your stay at in the heart of nature at Les Fontaines campsite. The town is perfect for an afternoon of shopping, with its beautiful shops and little Provençal restaurants nestling in pretty little squares. In one day, you can see the Palace of the Popes and the Bridge of Avignon, visit a little restaurant and indulge in a spot of afternoon shopping.
